Month 6. March 2011. Stories of Hope, Healing & Heart.

We say good-bye to Hilda McDaniel, legendary cheer coach

In the world of competitive cheerleading, Richmonder Hilda McDaniel was pretty much at the top of the pyramid.

She was also its foundation.

So it is no surprise that her death Saturday at age 64 sent a ripple of sadness through the generations of young athletes that the cheerleading pioneer coached over the past 39 years.

"The heart of our cheer world is heavy this week," said Julie Bolton of Lake Mary, Fla., on behalf of the group Cheer for a Cause. "She leaves a legacy that we all live and will endeavor to live up to."

Students & Community Rally to Help Teacher

Students and staff, family and friends are rallying to help their beloved teacher, Ms. Freda Mosely. Ms. Mosely is a Career and Technical Education teacher at Dudley High School in Greensboro NC, and she has Sarcoidosis. This disease causes scarring of the lungs.

After fighting the disease for years, she is now in desperate need of a double lung transplant. And her condition is delicate, because she has complications that may interfere with her placement on the transplant list.

Freda has a 15 year old son and they live in Greensboro. After being in the hospital in Chapel Hill for a month, she was finally able to come home last week.

According to her co-worker, Binta Hill, "she certainly needs financial help because she is no longer receiving income from Guilford County Schools and her insurance benefits are threatened as well".

If you are able to help, any donations would be appreciated. She still has medical bills on top of everyday living expenses for she and her son. You can send donations to Ms. Hazel Miller, Treasurer at Dudley High School. She can be reached at 336.370.8130. Checks should be made out to "NFT", the National Foundation for Transplants. You can also make donations on their website.

The community has come together and arranged several fundraisers. We were touched that one is called "Cheer For A Cause". The event will be held on April 16th at 9am, and the public is invited to attend. Tickets will be $10 at the door. For more information, contact Nina Johnson-Davis at 336.370.8136, x 4152 or email johnson2@gcsnc.com.

At the Cheer For A Cause event, cheer squads will perform a cheer/dance/stunt routine incorporating Ms. Mosely's name. So far, teams from Lincoln Academy and North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University are on board and Erwin Montessori School and North Carolina A&T's Rehab Counseling Department will participate. Local church groups and teachers are also planning to don cheer uniforms and shout out cheers for Ms. Mosely.
